Chinatown, Forever Review by Brandon Tsang

Chinatown Forever: A look through San Francisco’s Chinatown Through a Small Lens, Literally!

Hi! Brandon here! I’m ½ of the Business Administration team and I would like to share a small documentary that made me truly feel inspired and almost got me to go out and hear people’s stories! Sadly, of course, I could not have done so because of quarantine :(. I highly recommend everybody watch this 30-minute documentary!

Chinatown Forever is an Emmy-nominated documentary directed by James Q. Chan. The documentary features an 81-year-old (at the time the film was made) Frank Wong, a self-taught artist that has been for decades of his life creating miniature models of San Francisco Chinatown rooms, apartments, and houses. His art romanticizes history and preserves rooms in Chinatown, San Francisco to look like it did back then and preserves what Chinatown households looked like back then.

Wong’s dedication and years of making miniatures of Chinatown, San Francisco is truly inspiring and I hope to create a masterpiece that is only half as beautiful and splendid as his.

The 30-minute documentary was beautifully shot, masterfully put together with music, editing and cinematography. It was a beauty to see Wong‘s life and work and see the past in his miniatures. The film won several awards including the Seattle Asian Film Festival, Austin Asian Film Festival, Boston, and Boston Asian American Film Festival.

My only knowledge of this documentary being available is on Kanopy, a streaming-service website dedicated mainly documentary or educational films and movies
